Hector Olivera at Ebenezer Baptist Church

Event date:
August 26, 2012 - 4:00pm - 5:30pm

A concert celebrating the restoration of the pipe combination organ in the Horizon Sanctuary at Ebenezer Baptist Church will bring together the virtuosity of Hector Olivera and the powerful legacy of Mrs. Alberta Christine Williams King, mother of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., for whom the organ is named.

Mr. Olivera will play a 4:00 PM concert in the church on Sunday, Aug. 26. The beautiful 32,000-square-foot Horizon Sanctuary, which seats almost 2,500, was developed with architectural accents from the historic Ebenezer Heritage Sanctuary that stands across the street. The building's musical triumph is the digital-pipe combination organ, which was designed and engineered by A. E. Schlueter Pipe Organ Company and Chapel Music Company. The organ is controlled by a Rodgers digital console and its digital stops are augmented with over 3,000 pipes.

David Stills, a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and an accomplished concert organist, was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s organist. It was Mr. Stills who played at the funeral of Dr. King after his assassination in Memphis in 1968. Mr. Stills was instrumental in seeking the best possible instrument for worship at Ebenezer. It was through his expertise that Chapel Music was selected to provide this organ in the Horizon Sanctuary.
