Cathedral & Abbey Church of St Alban - Hertfordshire

United Kingdom

StAlban.jpg

Alban was England’s first Christian martyr, and the city and cathedral that grew up around the site of his death both bear his name. The Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban contains his shrine, and is also the home to one of the longest running and most prominent organ festivals in the world.

The Cathedral’s famous 1962 Harrison & Harrison pipe organ is undergoing a two-year rebuild, and in the meantime the Cathedral authorities have selected two Rodgers instruments to serve the music in one of the most prestigious of Britain’s cathedrals.

The Rodgers UK team, along with their pipe organ partners, MPOS Ltd., carried out the installation of a T807 in the Quire, and a Custom Trillium Masterpiece 928 in the Nave. Because this is the second-longest church in Britain, the two instruments have been linked via wireless MIDI so that for very large services, both can be played from a single console.

The majority of the audio system is situated in the triforium galleries, with the exciting exception of a Fanfare Trumpet division over the west doors, speaking down the whole length of the building.

The nave TM928 was designed by Mark Underwood of Rodgers UK to reflect broadly the Harrison organ’s specification. Andrew Lucas, Master of the Music said: “The Nave organ is very successful […] I marvel at how good it sounds. We are really delighted with the instruments and the service you are giving us.”
