PACHELBEL'S TOCCATA

Johann Pachelbel was a prolific and influential composer of organ music in the Baroque era. His influence lives on for a number of reasons—primarily as a teacher to the young J.S. Bach and as an early proponent of the multimovement "free" pieces which later became more standardized into forms such as the Prelude and Fugue.

This short toccata is a good introduction to his style. The manuals play rhythmic and ornamented motifs, the pedal work is simple, and the thematic material is equally at home on large or small organs, secular or sacred spaces. It can be used as a postlude, as part of a recital, or as a study piece.

PERFORMANCE TIPS

1. KEEP THE TEMPO STEADY

It's important to play cleanly, not to rush the tempo, and to let the flashy rhythms and unique harmonies shine through. Echo the same articulations between right and left hands.

2. CREATE TERRACED DYNAMICS

When possible, play around with creating terraced dynamics through the use of multiple manuals. Here, the Swell division plays with flutes and mutations while the Great plays with principals and full mixtures.

3. FOLLOW THE VOICE LEADING

While the South German school has a more homophonic texture compared to the North, Pachelbel is still writing in polyphonic form. Articulating each line, right and left hand, will help make for a more cohesive performance.

Bonus Tip: When possible, play with traditional Baroque sounding ranks. It can be surprising how much the intonation of the different stops can affect playing technique. Additionally, Rodgers organs have a number of onboard tools for recreating the sound of historical organs.
