LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING!

One of the most iconic patriotic hymns, coming from the African American tradition, is “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. Written by brothers James and John Johnson at the turn of the 20th century, its words form a prayer for both thanksgiving and freedom. It was quickly promoted by the NAACP and has since become synonymous with the Black community and all people coming together in celebration of hard-fought self-determination.

“Lift Every Voice and Sing” sheet music is included here and can be used as a choir anthem, a tune for a solo singer to perform for special music, or as a hymn if a congregation is familiar with the tune. It is commonly heard at Juneteenth celebrations, but is appropriate for any patriotic service and can make a moving addition to a 4th of July weekend service. This recording was made on an Infinity 367, featuring the alternate tremolos and onboard vocal samples.

Three Tips for Utilizing This Music

1. Keep the Tempo Stately

This anthem is full of rich harmonies, poetic verses, and a deep tremolo where possible. A slow and steady tempo helps keep the music clean and realize its stately glory.

2. Use Embellishments to Accentuate the Phrases

Adding grace notes, moving chromatic lines, and plagal cadences can bring attention to important text or melodic development.

3. Get Creative with the Chord Symbols

Use the included chord symbols to create your own accompaniment. One creative idea is to substitute E Major and minor chords for each other, creating variety and increasing the tension and release of the chord progressions.
