The Rodgers Organ Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s accomplishments for civil rights are known throughout the world today. The Baptist minister and social activist left a legacy of hope for the United States and his local community at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1999 the New Horizon Sanctuary was constructed to continue that legacy of hope and service to the local community. The beautiful 32,000 square foot sanctuary seats 1600 people and stands across the street from the historic Ebenezer Heritage Sanctuary where Martin Luther King Jr. would give sermons.

The church’s musical triumph is the new pipe/digital hybrid organ featuring 3000 pipes and a Rodgers console. Chapel Music Company and Rodgers was selected by Ebenezer Baptist Church to provide the organ for their new sanctuary. David C. Stills, former organist for Dr. King, served as the consultant and advisor during the planning, building and installation of the organ.

The Alberta Williams King Memorial organ is a large pipe organ enhanced by the custom Rodgers digital console. The four manual console controls the nine division of the organ with 162 stops and over 3000 custom-scaled pipes. The Rodgers console enhances the organ’s features and digital voices reinforce pipe voices providing a wonderful warm and rich tone.

The unique organ incorporates the tradition of a large pipe organ and the comprehensiveness of a large complement of digitals stops that serve as the foundation for continued service and hope to the local community and a reminder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.
